Predictably, there have been floods of tributes following the death of Prince. Numerous artists performed cover versions at the recent Coachella festival and there have also been a ton of TV performances. Here are a few of my favourites.
D’Angelo featuring Princess – Sometimes it Snows in April
D’Angelo’s stunning voice does perfect justice to this understated Parade closing track.
Bruce Springsteen – Purple Rain
The Boss pulls an unexpected, emotional performance of the Prince standard out of the bag.
Chris Stapleton – Nothing Compares 2 U
The Grammy-winning country music star bangs out a great version of the song made famous by Sinead O’Connor crying at his recent appearance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, California.
Corey Taylor – Purple Rain/Little Red Corvette
Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Taylor performing in his hometown of Minneapolis on the night that Prince died in the First Avenue club, a venue that appears in the Purple Rain movie. Opening the gig with an acoustice cover of Purple Rain and later adding a rendition of Little Red Corvette. Not a dry eye in the house that night.
LCD Soundsystem – Controversy
Electro-pop geeks whip out ‘Controversy’ during their set at this year’s Coachella festival.
In other Prince-related news (of which there has been quite a lot recently, Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman and other members of Prince’s band The Revolution have announced that they are getting back together to perform some shows. Read the full announcement on Pitchfork.com.
