I don’t usually bother with any of those ‘post your favourite…’ things on Facebook, even if they are music related but this was an exception as it was issued by a very good friend and another huge music fan so I knew I had to take it up. There were a million things I could have posted but I wanted each one to not only be a great song and video, but also for it to have some personal significance. One track I didn’t post that I was going to is tacked on the end, Die Antwoord’s ‘I Fink U Freaky’. I didn’t post this because my best friend Nick (that I had nominated to do the challenge) posted it just before me on the day I was going to use it. The bastard.

Day 1
Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction – Prime Mover

Great song, great video directed by Adrian Edmondson (of ‘Young Ones’ and ‘Bottom’ fame). This was one of my first favourite music videos ever and will always have a place in my heart. Without Zodiac Mindwarp there would be no Rob Zombie.

Day 2
Beastie Boys – 3 MCs and One DJ (Live Video Mix)

Until the epic 30-minute ‘Fight for Your Right (Revisited)’ video came out to accompany ‘Make Some Noise’ from the final Beastie Boys album ‘Hot Sauce Comittee: Part Two’, this was my favourite Beastie Boys video. With an excessively long intro sequence, this is a showcase for Mixmaster Mike as much as it is a Beastie Boys video and, as a result, is greater than the sum of its parts. MCA was the second celebrity to die that I was genuinely upset about, after Freddie Mercury. RIP Adam.

Day 3
Red Fang – Prehistoric Dog

Portland, Oregon is a haven for awesome rock music. It is also the home town of my friend Ben who nominated me for this challenge. We met because I was wearing a Red Fang t-shirt. Red Fang rule.

Day 4
Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip – Stunner

After only three albums, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip decided to call it a day. Three fantastic albums of sometimes awkward but heartfelt social commentary over unothodox beats and noises and day 4’s choice could equally have been either of the two versions of ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’ but I thought that Stunner had a better video..

Day 5
Anthrax & Public Enemy – Bring the Noise

A life long Public Enemy fan, I hard barely heard of Anthrax when this was released. This opened the door to thrash metal and the world beyond. Any music that takes you on a journey to somewhere unexpected should be treated with the respect it deserves whether you like the music or not. In this case, I love it.

Day 6
Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue – Where the Wild Roses Grow

One of the best albums ever created, Nick Cave’s ‘Murder Ballads’ is a blood-soaked roadtrip across America stopping off only to beat Kylie Minogue’s head in with a rock and leave her in a river. At least, that’s what I made of it.

Day 7
The Engines of Armegeddon – Fuck The Chip

Nottingham’s ‘The Engines of Armageddon’ are no more but they have spawned equally incredible bands in the shape of ‘Mammothwing’, ‘Dystopian Future Movies’, ‘The Distillery Blues Band’ and others no doubt to come. The Fisher brothers Bill and Marty are now good friends, as is Laura Turner who shot this video. I’m in this somewhere too. Fuck the Chip.

The One That Got Away…

Crazy and polarizing, South Africa’s Die Antwoord are and incredible force of nature. Surprisingly great live and now actual film stars thanks to Neil Blomkamfp’s grubby sci-fi morality tale ‘Chappie’. Unsettling videos, provocative subject matter and Zef slang are all thrown together to make this bizarre rap duo what they are and what music should be, confrontational and exciting.
